Where Art Originates offers a glimpse into the early stages of artistic creation—before works enter galleries, markets, or institutions. Presented by the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and curated by the program’s Creative Director, Mushi Wooseong James, this project foregrounds the generative conditions that make art possible: time, space, experimentation, and the freedom to explore.
At Djerassi, artists and scientists are given uninterrupted time on 583 acres of protected land in the Santa Cruz Mountains to develop work in a deeply focused, interdisciplinary environment. This presentation brings that ethos into the context of the San Francisco Art Fair, highlighting the often-unseen processes that shape contemporary practice.
Rather than emphasizing finished objects, Where Art Originates centers process, inquiry, and the evolution of ideas. The project reflects Djerassi’s long-standing commitment to supporting artists at critical moments in their development—when risk, reflection, and exploration are most essential. By situating this work within the fair, Where Art Originates invites audiences to consider not only what art becomes, but where and how it begins.
San Francisco Art Fair returns to Fort Mason Festival Pavilion from April 16–19, 2026, bringing together leading galleries from around the world alongside a dynamic program of public projects and conversations. Now in its 14th edition, the fair reflects the Bay Area’s experimental and inclusive spirit while serving as a platform for regional and international voices in contemporary art.
Public Projects, including Where Art Originates, extend the fair beyond the booth model—offering site-responsive installations, collaborations, and presentations by cultural organizations that engage broader audiences and expand the context of the fair experience.
