At the heart of Leonardo@Djerassi is a month-long residency for five (5) artists and five (5) scientists at Djerassi’s 583-acre retreat in the coastal Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco. The program also includes public and academic forums, published blogs, and articles in LEONARDO, the peer-reviewed journal of Leonardo/ISAST published by MIT Press. Leonardo@Djerassi residents also participate in Djerassi’s annual Open Studios, offering the public an opportunity to engage with their research, creative process, and works-in-progress.
Scientists selected for the program must be engaged in significant art-related research and/or be practicing artists themselves, or have original concepts for integrating art and science. This includes, but is not limited to, poetry, playwriting, fiction, creative nonfiction, choreography, music composition, media arts/filmmaking, painting, sculpture, photography, and installation art. Artists selected will have a demonstrated track record of work influenced by biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, environmental science, or agricultural science. A strong sense of play and experimentation is essential.
This is not a product-based residency. Artists and scientists are free to pursue their own projects, with the expectation that they remain in residence for the full session. Accommodations, meals, and local transportation are provided. Residents are also expected to collaborate and exchange ideas with colleagues across disciplines, participate in two public forums during their stay, and document or share aspects of their experience for both academic and general audiences.
