Protection of open space, forever. Half of the mission for the Djerassi Program is to preserve the land on which the Program is situated. Back in 1999, Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), a local land trust organization, purchased a conservation easement on the 583 acres owned by the Djerassi Program, ensuring the protection of our land as open space in perpetuity. The funds received from POST for the purchase of this easement have been used to maintain the Program’s land and buildings.

POST Conservation Easement

A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a land trust and a willing landowner that protects a property’s conservation values forever. Once a conservation easement is created, it becomes part of the title associated with the land. If and when a property is sold, the easement travels with the property and legally binds present and future owners to uphold the terms of the easement in perpetuity, ensuring the long-term protection and preservation of the specific conservation values associated with the property.

POST was founded in 1977 with a mission to protect and care for open space, farms and parkland in and around Silicon Valley. Since their founding, POST has protected more than 75,000 acres of permanent open space, farms and parkland across the San Francisco Peninsula with a vision to create a network of protected lands that provide scenic beauty, clean air and water, locally grown food and a place for people and wildlife to thrive for current and future generations. The Djerassi Program has committed to making our land part of that network of open space.

Djerassi Program property includes large stands of healthy redwood forests, incredibly scenic views, headwaters of two major tributaries in the San Gregorio Creek watershed, critical wildlife corridors between adjacent protected lands, and periodic public access and outdoor recreation with unique works of art. As landowners of such a unique and valuable place, we take our preservation role seriously. A revitalized stewardship program and a new land management plan will deepen our connection with the land, protect its ecology, and support our mission by preserving the land on which the Program is situated.
